Legs out swaddling
REVIEW
The Embé swaddle system offers a unique approach with three separate swaddle products: the starter swaddle (arms in), as well as long-sleeved and short-sleeved options. What makes this system particularly interesting is that you don’t need to start with the “starter” – the long or short-sleeved swaddles work equally well for initial swaddling, giving parents flexibility in their approach.

One of Embé’s features that we love is its unique leg-in-or-out option, which we haven’t seen in other swaddles. This flexibility allows parents to adjust according to their baby’s comfort preferences or room temperature, making it adaptable to various situations and seasons.
The Embé swaddles are hard to break out of, thanks to their multi-step design. The arms are zippered in, the legs can be positioned in or out of the pouch, and a wrap secures around the torso with hook-and-loop fasteners. This comprehensive approach works particularly well for babies who like a snug swaddle and need secure containment for quality sleep.
While the instructions may initially appear overwhelming due to the various components and steps, the actual process becomes much clearer once you have your baby in front of you and start practicing. The multiple fastening systems (zipper, snaps, and hook and loop) provide excellent security. Make sure to secure the wrap snugly.
The swaddles are made from high-quality jersey knit fabric and come in a variety of colors and patterns. The starter swaddle has an organic cotton option for parents who prefer natural materials.
At $40, the Embé sits in the mid-range price category, offering good value for the comprehensive design and containment features. However, some families found the 0-3 month sizing ran a bit small, which could require sizing up sooner than expected.
The Embé system is nearly escape-proof when properly secured, performing better than many average swaddles. However, if the wrap around the arms and torso isn’t snug enough, determined babies may still work their arms out through the neck hole. The short and long-sleeved versions seem to be slightly easier to escape from compared to the starter swaddle.
One big advantage of the Embé system is its transition capabilities. While the starter swaddle cannot be used for transitioning, both the long and short-sleeved versions allow for gradual transitions. You can start with one arm out, then both arms out, wrapping the band under the arms and around the torso, and continue using it even after your baby can roll.
The Embé swaddle is unique with its leg-in-or-out feature. While the different fasteners may seem complex initially, and some families found the hook and loop to lose effectiveness over time, it’s an excellent choice for families with babies who need secure swaddling and want options for a gradual transition.
Thickness/TOG Ratings
Available in 0.5 TOG, suitable for warmer room temperatures.
Ease of Use
Multiple steps involved: zip the body in, position legs in the pouch (or out), secure the snaps (which can feel fiddly), and wrap the band around the torso with hook and loop. It can appear overwhelming initially, but it becomes manageable with practice.
Diaper/Nappy Changes
You can remove legs from the pouch while keeping arms swaddled, though the process can feel somewhat clunky.
Fabrics
Made from quality jersey knit in cotton or organic cotton (organic only available in starter swaddle). Available in plenty of colors and patterns.
Adaptability
The starter swaddle cannot be used for transitioning, but both long and short-sleeved versions allow for gradual transitions. You can have one arm out, then both, wrapping the band under arms and around torso. Can continue to use even after the baby can roll.
Sizes
Three separate products with different sizing:
- Starter swaddle: 0-3 months, 6-14 lbs
- Long-sleeved swaddle: 0-3 months, 6-14 lbs
- Short-sleeved swaddle: 3-6 months, 12-18 lbs
Some families found the 0-3 month sizes ran a little small.
Escape proof
Nearly escape-proof – better than average swaddles. If the wrap around arms and torso isn’t snug enough, babies may get arms out through the neck hole. Short and long-sleeved versions were slightly easier to escape from than the starter.
PROS:
Unique legs-in-or-out feature not found in other swaddles
Three different swaddle options for flexibility
Excellent containment when properly secured
Long and short-sleeved versions allow for a gradual transition
Can continue to use after baby can roll (long and short-sleeved)
CONS:
Baby may be able to get their hands up through the neck hole
Some families found the 0-3 month size a little small
Hook and loop fasteners may lose stickiness after a couple of months
Diaper changes can feel clunky
Can appear overwhelming when first reading instructions
